Black Sails XX (Starz 30 Jan 2016, with Luke Roberts)

In Black Sails XX Flint and his crew are still being pursued by Hornigold (who is now working for the English). They have to head into a ship killing storm if they are to out-run him. It turns into a real battle of survival against the elements. Barely making it through with their lives Flint’s ship is left becalmed and running low on supplies.

Eleanor is en route back to Nassau with Woodes Rogers (who has been made the first Royal Governor of the Bahamas) and his flotilla of ships with which he plans to take control of the island. Rogers wants to know everything he can about the going ons on the island but doesn’t know whether he can trust Eleanor or not.

Edward “Blackbeard” Teach, having been unceremoniously kicked off the island by Eleanor years before, returns to Nassau now that there are no Guthries around any more. He is keen to know what is going on with the new arrangement the pirates have with each other.

Outside of the exciting, intense brilliantly realised storm sequences it’s an episode of scene setting, Rogers and Blackbeard both having their own agendas and both clearly going to be a major part of the drama.

Black Sails, more than any other series (including Game of Thrones in our opinion), looks as good as any TV series has ever looked. The equal of any big budget movie.
