Within These Walls: Nowhere for the Kids (ITV 24 Jan 1975, with Gillian Raine)

Nowhere for the Kids is the single episode of Within These Walls that seems to have fallen out of circulation. It’s not in the archives but a copy could still be floating around a foreign TV station somewhere. Unfortunately the TV Times of the week also didn’t carry a synopsis but instead had the quote “It is a very sorry state of affairs and a sad comment on society that not one but four lives should be threatened for the lack of a very basic need – four walls and a roof.” This would indicate that the episode was about what happened to the children of a mother when she is imprisoned. Another typically tough issue that the series didn’t shy away from.

This episode was chosen for a prestigious TV Times cover for the week (18 Jan 1975) and a strong three page feature/interview with Googie concentrating on both the success of the show and the fact that she, along with husband John McCallum were moving back to the UK for a time after an 18 year spell living in Australia. Both she and McCallum were big film stars during the 1940’s and moved to John’s native Australia when he was offered the job as joint managing director of a major theatre circuit and along started production company Fauna which was responsible for the hugely popular Skippy The Bush Kangaroo series.

Googie also talked about the impact Within These Walls was having and how much research she was conducting into her role as Faye. There was also plenty of coverage of Googie’s career in general.
