Tell us about Clean It, Fix It and what makes it stand out from other expert home makeover programmes?
It’s about making people’s homes user friendly and helping them utilise the space better in ways they may not have thought of. We all give unique insight into the projects and when we come together, we can make something great.
What made you want to be part of the programme?
The idea of helping people and spreading DIY knowledge so homeowners can think outside the box in order to enjoy their homes again. From reusing different furniture in new ways to upcycling to being more creative in their space, you can always make something that’s just as nice as the things you can buy.
If you could have one tool in your DIY bag that you take to every job, what would it be?
Common sense! It’s not so much the tools that make the job, but the ability to adapt and look at each scenario with a different perspective. With a unique approach with every situation, you can always overcome any challenges.
Tommy often talks about wisdom on the programme – what’s one thing you learned from him while working on Clean It, Fix It?
He’s taught me not to rush things. Tommy has a very careful and considered approach which helps us work together as a team.
You mention having a careful and considered approach, but you only had one day to transform the homes. How did you manage that?
Sometimes it felt like we had bitten off more than we can chew, but again, we work so well together and really get stuck in and get the job done. If we were constantly stressed about it, we wouldn’t get any work done. Tommy’s approach helped us balance out the more difficult projects.
What has it been like working with Maxine and Tommy?
Maxine is a ball of energy. No matter what she’s doing, she fills the whole place with energy. She always has a smile and is excited to clean. She’s also always stealing my tools and using them in creative ways. You just never know what she’s going to do with them!
Tommy is just an encyclopaedia of building knowledge. He’s full of random knowledge tips – you just can’t match that.
What’s your key piece of advice for viewers who want to do some DIY?
It goes without saying, but safety is important. As much as you can get creative with what you’re making, you need to put safety at the forefront.
I would also tell people not to worry about doing something right the first time. If you’re thinking out of the box and it doesn’t work out on the first try, that’s okay. You’ll learn from the experience.
