Missy, 27
Essex
The vibrant but chilled designer, who creates unapologetically bold pieces, inspired by the 90’s.
Unapologetic, vibrant but still almost always totally chilled – Missy has burst on to the UK fashion scene with collections full of bright colour and eye-catching pastels.
Growing up as a minority black person in Essex, fashion (and loud 90’s inspired designs), helped an at times introverted Missy speak her mind and send a message. Keeping the community at heart wherever she goes, this trendy female creative is producing standout gender neutral clothing and driving a fashion movement she wants everyone to feel a part of.
Tell us about your brand?
Misemi is a celebration of culture being unapologetically yourself and self-care and self-love.
What made you want to be on The Drop?
Being on The Drop was just an amazing opportunity and something that was a once in a lifetime opportunity, so I just had to grab it and see what comes of it. It was very out of my comfort zone. I but I just thought that when an opportunity comes, you should just take it.
How has the reaction from your friends and family when you got on the show?
My parents are obviously ecstatic. They’re really excited to see it. My sisters are excited to see it too. Everyone’s been super supportive. They feel like it’s real and I’m doing something. I’m like yes, it’s real! They’re loving it!
What are your fashion inspirations?
I take inspiration from my culture, but I also take inspiration from brands like Daily Paper, Rihanna – obviously! She’s a style icon, I love her. I also really like Heron Preston as well. I’m inspired by black owned brands and like to see how they promote their messages.
How would you describe your experience of the competition in three words?
Enlightening, journey, fun.
Did you have any memorable words of encouragement from the judges that you’ve kept?
I went on a journey of rediscovering my confidence in myself and my brand. Conversations that I had with Marc and Clara really stuck with me, so I just try and replay those as I continue to go throughout this journey as an entrepreneur. I just try to remember what we talked about and what they said and that has stuck with me.
What would you say to aspiring creatives who may be watching the show?
I would say just go for it. There’s no time to feel the fear. You just have to feel the fear and do it anyway. If you want to start a business or if an opportunity like this comes along, just feel the fear and do it anyway!
