The Voice Kids | Interview with Will.i,am

How much fun is it to be doing the show around Christmas time?

It makes you realise that we should have been doing The Voice Kids around Christmas all the time. This show is super important in 2021 and it was for the adult Voice too. For a long time so many festivals were cancelled and concerts cancelled but The Voice and The Voice Kids were on. It’s great for the adults, it’s great for the kids, it’s great for the people at home to see live music. It’s great for the music lovers and music makers.

It does bring so much joy which is what Christmas is all about, what’s the best Christmas song of all time in your opinion?

That’s tough…I would say Carol Of The Bells.

There’s a new Coach in town too as Melanie C has joined the show…

I never thought I’d be a Spice Boy but I’ve been rockin’ on stage with Sporty Spice.

Tell us about your team this year…

My team is very diverse this year, as always. Super eclectic. There’s so much variety.

What kind of advice have you been giving to them?

Just have fun.

And are you feeling confident about them?

Super confident but at the same time super sad that I’ll have to lose three from my four.

It seems like the level increases each year, do you feel like these kids have been watching previous seasons and coming in more ready than ever?

I think previous contestants inspire the folks that are at home and then the folks that are at home practice and practice and practice because now they know they’re going to come on The Voice. And it repeats that infectious cycle of inspiration and improvement and confidence building.

Who do you think has got the winner this year then – is it time for Team Will?

I don’t know. I stopped worrying about that part of the show. I’ve been doing the show for so long now that if I only focus on winning then I’m doing a disservice to the contestants because there’s more to learn on your journey than winning. There’s so many other skills to instill like tenacity and confidence regardless of the immediate outcome because there’s always a long term outcome that you want to prepare for.
