Let’s be honest. Holiday movie season is a mixed bag. For every heartwarming gem, there’s a stocking full of saccharine predictability. But Great American Family’s “A Royal Christmas Ballet,” premiering Saturday, at least offers a slight twist on the usual formula: ballet.
Brittany Underwood stars as a retired ballerina who, wouldn’t you know it, gets a second chance at the spotlight when she helps some royal ambassadors stage “The Nutcracker.” Jonathan Stoddard co-stars, presumably as the royal in question, because where there’s mistletoe and tutus, there’s almost certainly a prince.
Underwood’s character, presumably grappling with the fading glory of her past pirouettes, finds herself unexpectedly swept into the world of tiara-topped Christmas trees and possibly ridiculously named castles. The movie’s logline hints at a “surprise royal romance,” a surprise only to those who’ve never seen a holiday movie before. The premise certainly sounds like the kind of gentle fare Great American Family has built its brand on, a safe space for viewers seeking refuge from the often complicated realities of the holidays.
“A Royal Christmas Ballet” airs Saturday, November 9th at 8 p.m. ET/7 p.m. CT on Great American Family.
