Netflix is set to premiere Álex de la Iglesia’s latest thriller, ‘1992,’ on December 13th. This marks the streaming giant’s first miniseries collaboration with the acclaimed director, known for his darkly comedic and often unsettling films like ‘The Day of the Beast.’ Co-created with screenwriter Jorge Guerricaechevarría (‘Cell 211’), the series is a twisted tale of murder and mystery set against the backdrop of Seville’s Expo ’92.
The story centers on a series of murders, linked by a gruesome commonality: burned victims and the presence of a Curro doll, the Expo’s cheerful mascot, at each crime scene. This unsettling detail ties the killings to the event, injecting a dose of darkness into the celebratory atmosphere of Spain’s moment on the world stage.
Fernando Valdivielso and Marian Álvarez lead the cast, joined by Paz Vega and Carlos Santos. Filmed in both Madrid and Seville, ‘1992’ looks to capture the energy of the time and the unique environment of the Expo itself.
This project marks another collaboration for de la Iglesia and Guerricaechevarría, known for their often darkly comedic thrillers. Tackling a miniseries format, they aim to bring their distinctive style to a story steeped in Spanish history, exploring a grim undercurrent beneath the surface of a major cultural event.
1992 is a Pokeepsie Films production for Netflix.
