CBS is taking a big swing with Beyond the Gates, a new daytime drama that marks a milestone as the first Black soap opera in television history. Premiering Monday, February 24, 2025, the series, developed with the NAACP Venture and P&G Studios, arrives like a peacock in a room full of pigeons—flashy, ambitious, and a potential disruptor in a genre that’s felt stagnant for years. But will it be enough to revive a format struggling to find its footing in the modern TV landscape?

Set in the upscale, predominantly Black community of Crestview, Maryland, a fictional affluent Black community where the Dupree family reigns supreme. Of course, their perfectly manicured lawns and impressive estates hide the usual soap opera mess: secrets, rivalries, and enough simmering resentment to fuel a bonfire.

CBS promises a Dynasty-esque mix of glamour and drama, but one hopes Beyond the Gates will offer more depth than just opulent settings and catfights. The hour-long format offers a wider canvas, but also raises the question: will the storylines justify the extra time, or will viewers be subjected to drawn-out scenes of hand-wringing and over-the-top pronouncements?

Tamara Tunie, Clifton Davis, and Daphnee Duplaix lead the cast, their experience a welcome addition to a genre often populated by fresh faces still finding their way. Creator/showrunner Michele Val Jean sits in the director’s chair, and the collaboration with the NAACP Venture suggests a commitment to more than just surface-level representation. While the premise seems promising, the execution will be key. Can Beyond the Gates navigate the tricky terrain of tackling real social issues within the heightened reality of a soap opera, or will it fall into predictable melodramatic traps?

CBS is making a bold move launching a new soap in an era when daytime dramas are an endangered species. Passions in 1999 was the last original daytime soap to debut, making Beyond the Gates a risky endeavor. Will viewers embrace this updated take on a classic format, or will it become another casualty in the evolving television landscape? We’ll find out soon enough.

Beyond the Gates premieres Monday, February 24, 2025, airing weekdays on CBS and streaming on Paramount+ at 2:00 PM ET/1:00 PM PT.
