Game Changers 1×01 “Nintendo’s Wild Ride”: From Playing Cards to Pixels

The video game landscape could look drastically different had a certain 19th-century Japanese playing card company not had a prodigal son with a penchant for risk. Thankfully, for gamers everywhere, Nintendo had both. In its premiere episode, Discovery’s new docuseries “Game Changers” explores this fascinating origin story, charting the company’s unlikely ascent to global entertainment titan.

Forget Mario, Zelda, and Pikachu. “Game Changers” asks us to imagine a world without the ubiquitous creations of this once-humble playing card manufacturer. The series looks to be a vibrant (and hopefully not overly-sentimental) exploration of Nintendo’s triumphs, near-misses, and the sheer chutzpah that propelled it to the top of the gaming food chain.

“Game Changers: Nintendo’s Wild Ride” premieres Tuesday, November 5th at 9:00 PM on Discovery.
