HBO’s new four-part documentary series Breath of Fire premieres on October 23 at 9 p.m. ET/PT. Directed by Hayley Pappas and Smiley Stevens, the series takes viewers into the world of Kundalini yoga, highlighting the controversial career of Katie Griggs, also known as Guru Jagat.

Griggs rose to prominence as the face of the practice, establishing the RA MA Institute in Los Angeles and amassing a significant following. The series chronicles her transformation into a spiritual leader and examines the complexities surrounding the practice of Kundalini yoga.

The series reveals the darker side of Kundalini, focusing on the legacy of Yogi Bhajan, the Punjabi Sikh who introduced a version of the yoga to America in 1969. Bhajan’s teachings, once revered for promoting enlightenment and equality, were later marred by allegations of abuse within the organization. Despite these controversies, Griggs maintained her devotion to Bhajan, using her platform and online presence to attract new followers, including celebrities.
