An upcoming episode of the documentary series Imperfect Murder, titled “Better,” will air on Crime & Investigation on 21 June 2024. The episode looks into the brutal murder of 68-year-old Sondra Better in Delray Beach, Florida, in 1998, just days before her planned retirement and 50th-anniversary vow renewal.
On 24 August 1998, Better was found dead in the consignment shop where she worked. She had been stabbed and beaten, and the evidence suggested a violent struggle with her attacker. With fingerprints, DNA, and a witness description, the investigation initially seemed promising. However, the case went cold for two decades.
It wasn’t until December 2018 that a breakthrough occurred. Todd Barket, 51, applied for a job as a certified nursing assistant, requiring a background check and fingerprint submission. His fingerprints matched those found at the crime scene, and he was arrested in March 2019. Barket was sentenced to life in prison in August 2019 for the murder of Sondra Better.
“Better” explores the twists and turns of this cold case, highlighting the importance of forensic evidence and dogged police work in bringing a killer to justice, even after many years.
