Jeopardy! Wednesday July 17, 2024, Recap, Winner and Final Answer

Jeopardy Ken Jennings

Wednesday’s episode of Jeopardy! featured contestants Zach Eckstein, a law clerk from New York City; Nella Ballauer, a church secretary from Amarillo, Texas; and returning champion Jay Fisher, a government relations manager from Lisle, Illinois, who entered the game with one-day winnings of $1,799.

The first round presented an eclectic mix of categories, including “Cybertalk,” “The Folkie Era,” and “Arresting Literature.” Jay and Zach were off to a strong start, ending the first break with $3,800 and $3,600, respectively, while Nella trailed behind with $600.

In the first Daily Double, Nella took a risky bet of $1,000 on the “Cybertalk” category but unfortunately couldn’t give the correct response, losing her wager.

Entering Double Jeopardy!, Jay maintained his lead with $6,400, followed by Zach at $3,800, while Nella struggled to recover, starting the round with $0. The categories in this round were equally diverse, ranging from “U.S. Place Nicknames” to “Opera Heroines.”

Jay demonstrated his knowledge and strategic thinking by scoring on both Daily Doubles in this round. He added a total of $6,500 to his score, solidifying his lead. The second Daily Double, worth $1,200, was in the “U.S. Place Nicknames” category, and Jay provided the correct response of “Punxsutawney,” referring to Pennsylvania’s “Weather Capital of the World.”

The third Daily Double, valued at $1,600, was in the “Education” category, and Jay once again displayed his versatility by identifying Maria Montessori, whose first book outlining her educational method was published in 1909 as “Il metodo della pedagogia scientifica.”

With Jay pulling ahead, the competition for second place intensified between Nella and Zach. Heading into Final Jeopardy!, Jay had a comfortable lead with $19,700, while Nella and Zach tried to close the gap with $3,600 and $1,800, respectively.

The Final Jeopardy! category was “Literary Characters,” the clue: In a 1980 National Book Award winner, the title character’s name is derived from the rank of his late father—Technical Sergeant. A challenging question, “Who is T.S. Garp?,” which stumps all three contestants. Jay dropped $5,300 but still emerged as the winner with a final score of $14,400, bringing his two-day total to $16,199. Nella and Zach finished with $1,000 and $0, respectively.
