Lopez vs. Lopez: Lopez vs. In-Laws (NBC, Friday November 1, 2024)

Lopez Vs Lopez Key Art

This week, Lopez vs. Lopez turns its attention to the age-old sitcom trope of in-law friction. Quinten’s (Matt Shively) parents, Sam and Ruthie, arrive bearing Midwestern manners, which immediately sets George (George Lopez) and Rosie (Selenis Leyva) on edge. Because niceness is clearly suspicious.

The episode’s premise is about as original as a white bread sandwich, but perhaps the execution can elevate the material. Can the show find fresh humor in this well-worn setup, or will it simply traffic in tired stereotypes about overbearing parents and cultural clashes?

Let’s be honest, the success of this episode rests entirely on the performances and the writing. If the jokes are sharp and the characters relatable, even a predictable plot can work. However, if the humor relies on tired clichés, viewers may find themselves reaching for the remote faster than George can find a reason to complain about Sam’s casserole.
