Netflix

Netflix has announced a three-part documentary series centered on the death of Boston Police Officer John O’Keefe. The series will examine the subsequent trial of Karen Read, O’Keefe’s then-girlfriend, who faced charges of second-degree murder and other offenses.

John O’Keefe was found unresponsive in the snow in Canton, Massachusetts, on January 29, 2022. He was pronounced dead at the hospital, marking the beginning of a complex case. The documentary will unravel the details, including the defense’s argument that Karen Read was framed as part of an alleged conspiracy involving both civilians and law enforcement.

Read’s trial concluded with a hung jury, resulting in a mistrial declaration on July 1, 2024. The prosecution intends to retry the case, while the defense has filed to dismiss two of the charges. The series aims to provide a sensitive and respectful exploration of the complex story, produced by Sandpaper Films.

Executive producers Susannah Price and Henry Singer bring their expertise to the project, while co-directors Danielle Johnson and Rob Miller shared: “The team feels immensely privileged to be bringing this important series to a Netflix global audience. It is a case that has garnered a huge amount of public attention and has far-reaching implications.”
