In the Mediterranean, Paddy McGuinness and Chris Harris explore the Greek island of Ikaria, known for the longevity of its residents. Many Ikarians live past 90, outpacing the average lifespan in the UK by a decade. Paddy and Chris embark on a journey to uncover the secrets behind this remarkable phenomenon.

The duo’s first stop is a village in the Highland Plateau, home to many of the island’s oldest residents. They immerse themselves in the simple Ikarian way of life by assisting a local family in their daily chores. Chris tries his hand at goat milking for cheese, while Paddy lends a hand with fence-building in the fields. The hard work pays off as they are treated to a delicious Ikarian feast, showcasing the islanders’ commitment to an organic diet, which is believed to contribute to their long lives.

Later, Paddy and Chris venture to the southern coast to meet Stavros, a 78-year-old fisherman. They join him on the Aegean Sea, discussing the Ikarian approach to retirement, or lack thereof, and its potential impact on longevity. Despite their best efforts, they may be more of a hindrance than help with the day’s catch.

Stress-free living is another Ikarian hallmark, and the island offers an array of relaxing pursuits, including surfing. Chris and Paddy, as novices, take to the waves, experiencing a stress-busting surf session that is more about wiping out than riding them. Nonetheless, they agree that it boosts their endorphins and leaves them feeling good.

The pair then embrace an Ikarian night out, which, to Paddy’s dismay, involves less drinking and more backgammon. Across the island, men gather to play this traditional board game, believed to promote brain health. Chris attempts to teach Paddy, but it doesn’t go as smoothly as expected.

As their time on the island nears its end, Paddy surprises Chris with a challenge designed to test their mental fortitude and push them beyond their comfort zones—rock climbing. Under the guidance of professional climbers, Nick and Evangelos, they tackle a 20-meter-high, nearly vertical rock face while equipped with safety gear. For Chris, who struggles with acrophobia, this may prove to be his most daunting task yet.

On their final day, Paddy and Chris attend a panigiri, a traditional village party celebrating a saint’s day. They immerse themselves in the festivities, enjoying another warm welcome and feast. Paddy, ever the entertainer, introduces the locals to a British favorite—bingo. Always prepared, he carries his bingo balls everywhere he goes. Will this game translate across cultures? As they bid farewell to Ikaria, both reflect on the insights and experiences gained from their unique adventure.

Paddy and Chris: Road Tripping, Greece airs on Sunday, 6 October 2024, at 8:00 PM on BBC One.
