The upcoming episode of Pirates: Behind the Legends on Nat Geo explores the life and times of the infamous pirate captain, Bartholomew Roberts, also known as Black Bart. Airing on Saturday, June 29, 2024, at 10:00 PM, the episode tells the story of this bold and fearless leader, who plundered and looted an astonishing number of ships.

Born in Pembrokeshire, Wales, in 1682, Bartholomew Roberts became one of the most successful pirates of the Golden Age. Known for his daring and organisational skills, he terrorized the Caribbean, preying on ships, including superior warships. Roberts is said to have captured and looted more vessels than his notorious contemporaries such as Blackbeard, Edward Low, Jack Rackham, and Francis Spriggs combined. His preferred targets were fishing boats, and it is estimated that he plundered around 400 ships.

What set Roberts apart was his unconventional approach to piracy. He had a penchant for fine clothing and jewellery, which was typical of pirate captains. However, he stood out for his preference for drinking tea over rum, and he actively discouraged drunkenness among his crew while at sea.

Roberts’ swashbuckling career came to an abrupt end in 1722 when he was killed in action by pirate hunters off the coast of Guinea, West Africa. His short but impactful life left a lasting legacy in the annals of pirate history.

Pirates: Behind the Legends – Bartholomew Roberts airs on Nat Geo, on Saturday, June 29, 2024, at 10:00 PM.
