Director Renny Rye shares his recollections of working on Karaoke, an unusual collaboration between the BBC and Channel 4, in this documentary. The program pays tribute to the late Dennis Potter, the renowned writer who crafted some of British television’s most groundbreaking moments.
Airing on BBC Four, the documentary looks into the unique circumstances surrounding Karaoke and its sister piece, Cold Lazarus, which were broadcast on both channels in 1996 as a tribute to Potter, who wrote them knowing he was dying from cancer.
In this intimate 15 minute preview piece, Renny Rye reflects on the challenges of bringing Potter’s final works to life and discusses Karaoke’s place within the writer’s celebrated body of work. He also shares his experiences of directing an impressive cast, including Albert Finney, Keeley Hawes, Richard E. Grant, Julie Christie, Anna Chancellor, and Saffron Burrows.
