‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ Expands with Multiple Season Renewals on MTV and Paramount+

Rupaul's Drag Race

The “RuPaul’s Drag Race” franchise is set to continue its reign, with MTV and Paramount+ announcing the renewal of multiple iterations of the hit drag competition series. Central to this expansion is the confirmation of a 17th season of the flagship “RuPaul’s Drag Race” on MTV. This follows the highly successful season 16 finale, which attracted the highest ratings for a “Drag Race” episode in 13 years and culminated in the crowning of Nymphia Wind as America’s Next Drag Superstar.

Accompanying this, viewers will also be treated to a new season of the Emmy-winning aftershow, “RuPaul’s Drag Race: Untucked”. This behind-the-scenes companion series explores the untold stories and interactions between the queens.

Paramount+ is also doubling down on its investment in the franchise, greenlighting the tenth season of “RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars”. The ninth season, a groundbreaking charity edition, concluded with Angeria Paris VanMicheals inducted into the “Drag Race Hall of Fame” and a substantial donation of $200,000 to the National Black Justice Coalition. This season also included a special appearance from Vice President Kamala Harris, a moment that underscored the show’s increasing cultural impact.

Additionally, “RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars: Untucked” will return, offering an unfiltered look at the All Stars’ competitions.

The host and namesake of the franchise, RuPaul, continues to break records. Already a trailblazer as the most decorated person of colour in Emmy history, RuPaul added to his accolades with a ninth consecutive nomination for Outstanding Host for a Reality or Reality Competition Program. This nomination ties him for the most nominations in this category.

The “RuPaul’s Drag Race” franchise is currently celebrating multiple Emmy nominations across various technical and creative categories. These include Outstanding Host for a Reality or Reality Competition Program, Reality Competition Program, and Directing for a Reality Program, among others.

Beyond the accolades, the “RuPaul’s Drag Race” platform has been instrumental in raising awareness and funds for important causes. Through its partnership with the ACLU’s Drag Defense Fund, the show has helped raise over $2 million this year alone.

Expanding its global reach, the franchise debuted “RuPaul’s Drag Race Global All Stars” on Paramount+ on 16 August. This spin-off brings together fan favourites from around the world to compete for the title of “Queen of the Mothertucking World”, a substantial cash prize, and a place in the International Pavilion at the Drag Race Hall of Fame.

Season 16 of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” is currently available for streaming on Paramount+. Additionally, Logo will air a special marathon of the season across two days, starting on 16 August.
