The final episode of Sandringham: A Royal Residence with Nigel Havers takes us back to 1952, when Sandringham House had been in the royal family for 90 years. Over time, the house had expanded to include 364 rooms, featuring a bachelor’s wing and a stunning ballroom. However, tragedy struck unexpectedly.
Nigel Havers reveals that on February 6th, King George VI, aged 56, passed away suddenly in his sleep at Sandringham House. His daughter, the new Queen Elizabeth, was just 25 years old and had little time to grieve before assuming her new role. She soon returned to Sandringham to prepare for her upcoming coronation.
Raksha Dave gains insight into life at Sandringham during this period through the private diary of the designer of the Queen’s coronation dress. Meanwhile, JJ Chalmers uncovers the traditions Queen Elizabeth initiated during her first Sandringham Christmas as Queen, some of which continue to this day.
JJ also learns about a devastating flood that threatened the estate, while Nigel discovers Prince Philip’s frugal nature and his innovative money-saving schemes. These included the surprising decision to open the private country home to the public, with eager visitors paying 30p per person (£1.60 in today’s money) during the 1970s.
The episode also covers the sad passing of Prince Philip in April 2021 and the subsequent death of Queen Elizabeth in 2022. Sandringham was then inherited by their son, King Charles, who has plans for eco-friendly alterations to put his mark on the place. Eventually, Prince William will inherit the house that has been in the royal family for over 160 years.
Sandringham: A Royal Residence with Nigel Havers, Episode 3, airs on Channel 5, Saturday 10 August 2024, at 9:00 pm.
