In the fourth episode of Saving Lives’ second season, orthopaedic surgeon Clare Carpenter faces a challenging situation at Cardiff’s Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospital. With an influx of emergency cases over the weekend, the hospital is stretched thin, lacking sufficient beds and nurses for all the children in need of surgery.
Clare and her team are determined to avoid cancelling planned operations, but the task proves daunting. One of their urgent cases is seven-year-old Olly, who broke his leg at school and was airlifted to the hospital. The break occurs in the same spot as a previous femur fracture, and the team must stabilise the break and determine why Olly’s bones are more fragile than they should be.
Meanwhile, neurosurgeon Amr Mohamed assembles a unique specialist team at the University Hospital of Wales to tackle a complex condition affecting the skull in a nine-hour operation.
Ophthalmology surgeon Magdalena Popiela also features prominently in this episode as she fights to preserve the eyesight of a mother of two who suffers from congenital cataracts.
Saving Lives Season 2 Episode 4 airs Tuesday, 10 September 2024, at 9:00 pm on BBC Two.
