Secrets of a Murder Detective returns with a new episode, “Gamble with Death,” airing on True Crime on Thursday, June 27, 2024. The episode looks into the disturbing murder of Yang Liu, whose torso was found in a suitcase in a remote lay-by off the Woodhead Pass in 2016.
In October 2016, Ming Jiang, a Chinese national, invited his friend, Yang Liu, to his home in Beswick, Manchester. However, this invitation led to a sinister turn of events as Jiang, a gambler with substantial losses, had lured Liu to his house with the intention of killing him.
The episode recounts the gruesome details of how Jiang dismembered Liu’s body, removing his lower legs and arms at the joints. He then stuffed the headless torso into a suitcase and set it on fire in a remote location, where it was discovered by hikers the next day. Despite the investigation, Liu’s head and limbs were never recovered.
The episode features interviews with Detective Keogh and SIO Terry Crompton, who provide insights into the case and the mind of the murderer. They discuss the impact of Jiang’s gambling addiction, which led to him racking up losses of over £273,000, and how this may have motivated the brutal murder.
