The six semi-finalists for BBC Young Musician 2024 have been revealed. Among them are English/Swedish violinist Maya Broman Crawford-Phillips, harpist Jamaal Kashim from Surrey, and Israeli-born violinist Shlomi Shahaf.
Other semi-finalists include Bournemouth cellist Hugo Svedbert and pianists Ryan Wang and Jacky Zhang. These young musicians were selected from 12 quarter-finalists, following the broadcast of the final quarter-final on 6 October on BBC Four and BBC iPlayer.
The semi-final, recorded at Swansea University’s Great Hall, will be broadcast on 13 October. Presenter Jess Gillam has hosted every round of this year’s competition. The three musicians who progress will compete in the Grand Final, held at Bristol Beacon, performing concertos alongside the BBC National Orchestra of Wales under the baton of Ben Gernon. The full event airs on 20 October on BBC Four, with highlights on BBC Two.
Judges for the competition include trumpeter Alison Balsom, pianist Alexis Ffrench, and multi-instrumentalist Hannah Catherine Jones, assessing performances in every televised round. BBC Young Musician is in its 10th year, with the BBC Young Jazz Musician final also returning in November at London’s Queen Elizabeth Hall as part of the EFG London Jazz Festival.
BBC Young Musician 2024 is produced by BBC Studios Music and Entertainment Wales, with Stephen James-Yeoman as Commissioning Editor.
