The Serpent Queen

Starz has officially cancelled The Serpent Queen, bringing an end to Catherine de Medici’s story after two seasons. Despite the cancellation, discussions about a spin-off starring Minnie Driver are underway.

The series featured Samantha Morton as Catherine de Medici, alongside Amrita Acharia, Enzo Cilenti, Barry Atsma, Nicholas Burns, Danny Kirrane, Sennia Nanua, Beth Goddard, Antonia Clarke, and George Jaques. Catherine’s narrative is told through flashbacks, where she explains her actions and lessons to her servant Rahima.

Starting at age 14, Catherine, orphaned but with a sizable dowry negotiated by her uncle Pope Clement, marries into the 16th-century French court. Despite her commoner origins, the union, meant to produce numerous heirs, faces complications when Catherine’s husband reveals his affection for Diane de Poitiers. Facing uncertainty and the possibility of infertility, Catherine has to deal with the machinations within the court and outsmart her adversaries.
