Storyville presents “Bad Press,” a documentary airing on BBC Four on Tuesday, 25 June 2024, at 10:00 pm. The film tells the story of the Muscogee Nation, the fourth-largest Native American tribe, and their fight for a free and independent press.
In 2018, the Muscogee Nation was one of only five out of 574 federally recognised tribes to establish a free press, a landmark achievement. However, this progress was abruptly halted when the tribe’s legislative branch repealed the Free Press Act, subjecting their hard-hitting news outlet, Mvskoke Media, to direct editorial control by the tribal government.
The documentary follows defiant journalist Angel Ellis as she refuses to accept this act of oppression and battles against the corrupt faction of the Muscogee National Council. With an election approaching, Angel and her allies rally for press freedom by advocating for a voter-supported constitutional amendment.
“Bad Press” is a timely and unprecedented narrative that unfolds with the energy and suspense of a political thriller. It highlights the ongoing fight for freedom of the press and against state-censored media, presenting an engaging and thought-provoking story.
