In this episode of Super Surgeons, we meet two patients, Jonathan and Dave, both facing unique and challenging health crises.
Jonathan, a 48-year-old fitness enthusiast, has been living with a rare melanoma in his lower body for three years. Remarkably, he has never felt unwell during this time, as if his cancer journey is happening to someone else. However, a recent scan reveals a concerning development: an isolated tumour has appeared between his esophagus and heart, and the immunotherapy that once helped is no longer effective.
With limited options, consultant oesophageal and gastric surgeon Professor Asif Chaudry proposes a daring solution: robotic surgery that has never been attempted before in a similar situation. The goal is to give Jonathan more time and a chance at life.
On the other hand, 66-year-old Dave has been referred to the Royal Marsden Hospital with a massive vascular tumor. After working as a postie for 30 years, he initially attributed his back pain to his occupation. However, scans reveal a large vascular tumour wrapped around his left kidney and potentially attached to his liver.
Consultant urological surgeon Professor David Nicol faces a complex challenge. He must collaborate with colleagues to plan and execute a multi-disciplinary surgery that also addresses the high risk of major bleeding.
