Channel 4 presents the third episode of Super Surgeons: A Chance at Life, airing on Tuesday, 2 July 2024, at 9:00 pm. This episode, filmed over a year at the Royal Marsden, a world-leading cancer specialist hospital, follows the stories of two patients: Lauren and Matthew.
Lauren, 30, first noticed a lump in her groin when she was eight years old. Due to the rarity of her cancer and the limitations of diagnostics at the time, it went undetected. The cancer returned years later, and she now faces the challenge of managing her condition while navigating the uncertainties of life as a young woman.
Consultant surgical oncologist Mr. Myles Smith aims to remove the latest tumor and help Lauren gain a better understanding of her cancer so she can move forward with hope and confidence.
Matthew, 74, is facing his fourth cancer diagnosis. He has led a full life, enjoying a successful career and traveling the world with his beloved family. Now, he finds himself confronting his most complex surgery yet, involving a tumor located between his oesophagus and stomach.
The procedure, performed by consultant oesophagael and gastric surgeon Professor Asif Chaudry, is extremely intricate due to Matthew’s previous surgeries, requiring precise navigation and expertise.
