Susan Calman’s Grand Day Out: West Yorkshire Valleys (Channel 5, 18 July 2024)

Channel 5

Susan Calman embarks on another adventure with her beloved campervan, Helen, as they explore the West Yorkshire Valleys. In this episode, Susan discovers treats and surprises in every town and village she visits, from stunning landscapes to iconic buildings and warm Yorkshire hospitality.

Susan’s journey begins in Keighley, where she encounters a unique group of mascots preparing for a charity race. She interviews a pantomime horse, a former race champion, and even serves as the race commentator. With nearly 20 mascots competing, it’s a sight to behold.

From there, Susan travels to Holmfirth, famously known as the setting for the long-running sitcom Last of the Summer Wine. She explores the village, walks in the footsteps of its beloved characters, and learns behind-the-scenes stories from the residents about their interactions with the show’s stars.

Venturing onto Ilkley Moor, Susan learns about local traditions and the importance of wearing a hat when exploring this rugged landscape. She tries on a few options before taking in the stunning views and enjoying an unexpected dip.

In the village of Upperthong, Susan discovers a unique sport—welly wanging—and meets a former champion. She gives it a go, first with an official-sized welly and then with a Calman-sized option.

The trip culminates in York, where Susan visits the National Railway Museum, a rail enthusiast’s dream. She learns about the impact of railways on timekeeping and lays eyes on the iconic Flying Scotsman.

Susan Calman’s Grand Day Out: West Yorkshire Valleys airs on Thursday, 18 July 2024, at 9:00 pm on Channel 5.
