Channel 5

Channel 5’s upcoming program, “Text Scams: Don’t Get Caught Out,” sheds light on the profound psychological impact that scams can have on unsuspecting victims. Host Alexis Conran delves into the deceptive tactics employed by scammers and takes on one such individual in an attempt to expose their fraudulent activities. Through this exploration, viewers gain insight into the methods scammers employ to deceive their victims without them even realizing they are being conned.

The episode features interviews with individuals who have fallen prey to various scams, highlighting the devastating consequences that can result from these criminal acts. One such victim is Kelly from the West Midlands, who had already been facing challenges due to the housing crisis in the UK. Kelly lost over £2,000 to a scammer who promised her a dream home for rent. Unfortunately, it turned out that the house was owned by someone else and already occupied, leaving Kelly homeless as a result.

Another victim we meet is Meena, who received a call from what she believed was her broadband provider’s customer service team offering assistance with a technical issue. Unbeknownst to her, she was actually speaking with a scammer who successfully locked her out of her own mobile phone and hacked into her bank account, stealing nearly £1,000.

The show also shares Ava’s heartbreaking story of falling victim to romance fraud. Believing she was engaged in an online relationship with an attractive American engineer, Ava gradually gave increasing amounts of money when he made requests after several months. Ultimately, she lost her entire life savings. Adding further anguish to this situation is Ava’s son Steven, who discovered the scam while his mother lay unconscious in the hospital. He had to deliver the crushing news that Ava had unwittingly sent £67,000 to a criminal in Nigeria – potentially exposing herself to charges of money laundering on behalf of the scammer.

This particular scammer entices potential victims by promising to multiply their £500 investment into £5,000 within just 45 minutes.

Throughout the episode, viewers are also educated on best practices for protecting themselves from scams. Ethical hacker Mike Godfrey provides expert insights, including cautionary guidance on how not to securely erase personal data from electronic devices one wishes to discard.
