Channel 5

The Night Caller, a gripping thriller set in Liverpool, continues with its second episode, airing on Channel 5 at 9:00 PM on Monday, the 8th of July 2024. The story revolves around Tony, a lonely taxi driver in his 50s, played by Robert Glenister, whose life has taken a downward spiral since losing his job as a teacher. With his confidence shattered, Tony’s marriage has collapsed, leaving him isolated and seeking solace in the company of cafe worker Rosa (Suzanne Packer) and the radio broadcasts of DJ Lawrence (Sean Pertwee).

In this episode, Tony begins to face the consequences of his actions. As the realization of his previous night’s events sinks in, he enters survival mode, attempting to cover up his horrific deeds. He seeks help from Rob, a fellow night café patron, but their interaction hints at a deeper knowledge Rob may possess regarding Tony’s situation. Meanwhile, Lawrence’s radio show buzzes with the news of the incident, revealing that Ste Murray, the man from the previous night, is a notorious local criminal in Liverpool with a history of violence.

The discussion on the radio takes an intriguing turn as callers debate the concept of ‘taking the law into your own hands,’ with some justifying Ste’s fate. Interestingly, Tony finds solace in these calls, gradually reconciling his actions. However, the police are now involved, as DS Marshall questions Tony after spotting his cab on CCTV near the crime scene. While Tony manages to evade suspicion, DS Marshall remains unconvinced.

The episode also explores the friendship between Tony and Rosa as they share a dinner where she questions him about the night he picked up Ste. Tony becomes visibly uncomfortable, excusing himself to the bathroom to calm down. The story takes an emotional turn as Lawrence, promoting his new book, Listen, reveals a personal struggle with cancer. This moment solidifies Tony’s attachment to Lawrence, feeling a unique connection as if the words are directed at him alone.

As Tony drives away, he suddenly finds himself the target of a violent ambush.
