The reality TV landscape is littered with enough singing competitions to make Simon Cowell’s ears bleed. So, when a new one struts onto the stage, it better have a decent hook. “Second Chance Stage,” premiering Thanksgiving Day on Max and Magnolia Network, might just have found its niche. This isn’t your typical “American Idol” retread. Instead, it focuses on contestants who, for various reasons, shelved their dreams of stardom. Now, they’re dusting off those tap shoes and grabbing the mic again.
This Wednesday, “The Talk” is expected to offer a sneak peek at this potential feel-good hit. Judge Taye Diggs and host Emmanuel Acho will be on hand to discuss the show’s unique premise. They’ll likely explain why they think this show, featuring everyday people taking another swing at their aspirations, is worth our time. I only hope they avoid the usual platitudes about “inspiration” and “following your dreams.”
Of course, the cynic in me wonders if “Second Chance Stage” is simply another variation on a tired formula. Are these truly compelling stories, or just manufactured sentimentality designed to tug at our heartstrings during a holiday devoted to overeating? Will it offer anything genuinely new, or are we just watching a reheated version of a familiar recipe? The appearance on “The Talk” should give us a better idea of what to expect.
Beyond the reality TV preview, the episode will also feature a performance of “Power of Love” from “Back to the Future: The Musical,” currently running on Broadway. So, there’s a potential spoonful of sugar to help the “Second Chance Stage” medicine go down, or at least an alternative if the talent competition talk proves too saccharine.
“The Talk” airs Wednesday at 11:00 AM on CBS.
