In the latest episode of Hulu’s “We Were the Lucky Ones,” the Kurc family’s resilience is tested in the face of impending violence during World War II. The episode, titled “Monte Cassino,” follows Halina and Adam as they brace for potential violence in Warsaw, while Genek undertakes a perilous mission. Meanwhile, Addy grapples with uncertainty, his family’s whereabouts unknown.
The series, based on Georgia Hunter’s novel, recounts the experiences of the Kurc family, Polish Jews, during World War II. It begins in 1939, with the family celebrating Passover in Radom, Poland, unaware of the looming threat of war. As the story unfolds, the Kurcs are forcibly separated, scattered across Europe and beyond. Some hide, others flee, and some end up in concentration camps.
In the previous episodes, viewers witnessed the Kurc family’s determination to survive and reunite. Halina and Bella embarked on a journey to Lvov, while Sol, Nechuma, and Mila remained in German-occupied Radom. Addy, the middle son, joined the Polish division of the French Army, and Genek and Herta faced the harsh realities of a Siberian labor camp.
As the series progresses, the Kurc family endures unimaginable hardships. They are subjected to anti-Semitic persecution, forced labor, and the constant threat of violence. Despite their struggles, they remain resilient, doing whatever it takes to survive and find solace in each other.
In “Monte Cassino,” the focus shifts to Halina and Adam’s preparations for potential violence in Warsaw. Meanwhile, Genek’s dangerous mission definitely piles on the tension.
We Were the Lucky Ones airs Thursday, April 26, 2024, at 3:00 a.m. on Hulu.
