“Who Killed WCW?,” a four-part documentary series produced by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s Seven Bucks Productions, premiered on Vice TV on June 4, 2024. The series delves into the rise and fall of World Championship Wrestling (WCW), once a dominant force in the wrestling world.
WCW, founded by Ted Turner in 1988, initially struggled financially but found success in the mid-1990s under the leadership of Eric Bischoff. Bischoff signed Hulk Hogan, creating the New World Order (nWo) storyline, and launched the blockbuster Monday night show, “Nitro,” which went head-to-head with WWE’s “RAW.”
However, costly talent acquisitions, contracts, and creative missteps led to declining ratings and pay-per-view buys, resulting in significant financial losses. The AOL Time Warner merger further worsened the situation, shifting the company’s focus away from wrestling.
The series features exclusive interviews with wrestlers, executives, and insiders, including Eric Bischoff, Vince Russo, Booker T, Kevin Nash, and Bill Goldberg, who share their insights and experiences.
Who Killed WCW?: Where The Big Boys Play premieres on Tuesday, June 4, 2024, at 10:00 PM on Vice TV.
