Wild West Chronicles turns its lens on the story of Willie Kennard, a former slave and Union soldier who answers a desperate call for a new marshal in the turbulent mining town of Yankee Hill, Colorado. After three marshals fall in as many months, the town council places an advertisement seeking someone to restore order. Kennard steps up, but faces skepticism and must prove his mettle.
The episode focuses on Kennard’s immediate actions to establish his authority. He confronts the town bully, resulting in a deadly shootout. His next challenge involves Billy McGeorge and his gang, who prey on trains and passengers carrying gold. Finding himself without deputies, Kennard must face this threat alone.
Years later, Bat Masterson, the show’s framing device, receives a request to document Kennard’s remarkable story. This sets the stage for a recounting of the marshal’s bravery and his significant contribution to the history of the Old West.
